Reflecting on 2020

It’s been awhile since I’ve written a blog, or created any new artwork for that matter, and it looks like this will be my last project for quite some time.

I know 2020 has been a difficult year for everyone, so it’s understandable that we’re all ready to put it behind us. Most of us will look back on this year and struggle to find anything good to say about it. From a global pandemic to political chaos, it’s easy to see why.

But for me, 2020 was the year I was given a gift. You see, 10 years ago I was told the heartbreaking news that conceiving would be pretty much impossible without medical help, and after fertility treatments failed, I eventually accepted the fact that being a mother just wasn’t in the cards for me.

So when I went to the doctor in January, for what I thought was a stomach bug, you can imagine my surprise when I was given the news. My due date was the day after my birthday and we were having a girl!

She couldn’t wait to make her debut and was born there weeks early. We didn’t even have the car seat installed yet! That certainly wasn’t fun trying to figure that out while in labor at 5:00 in the morning. Ugh!

But she wasn’t in too big of a hurry though. After 20 hours of labor and 3 hours of pushing, she was born a little after midnight by c-section. She was too stubborn to take hand out of her mouth to come out the old fashioned way. Haha!

I will always be grateful for my art. It has been like therapy and really helped me heal. I was finally able to let go of my past and all the painful memories that haunted me. It also allowed me to travel and took me to places I never thought I’d see. Some of the highlights of my life are seeing my artwork hang in galleries as faraway as Venice, Italy and London, England.

But nothing compares to holding my daughter in my arms. She’s my little moon child and the best thing that has ever happened to me. So I’ll be entering 2021 with my heart (and hands) full.

Fingers crossed for a happy and healthy New Year for everyone!
